Working to make a difference
I am Gracia Violeta Ross Quiroga, a 28-year-old woman from Bolivia living
with HIV. It was in March 2000, when I had an infection that would not heal,
that I went to hospital for tests. I was tested for many different illnesses
including HIV. When the HIV test came back HIV positive, I could not believe it.
My family did not reject me but received me with open arms, and told me they did
not want to know what happened, they just wanted to be with me and support me
until the last day. Since I completed my Bachelor’s degree, I have been writing
publications and giving lectures on gender issues and the plight of PLWHA. The
terrible injustices affecting PLWHA in my country, especially against women,
encouraged me to get involved.
Read more about Gracia’s work, and the work of 20 other young women in a
world of AIDS in “If I Kept it to Myself: women intervene in a world of AIDS”.

Using my story to break the silence
Hlophe discovered she was HIV positive in 1999. “It was a great blow to my
family. Our culture says only women bring home this disease, ..therefore it was
my fault.” Hlophe and four other women founded the Swaziland Positive Living for
Life (SWAPOL) group in 2001, determined to break the country’s silence about
HIV/AIDS. “We used our own stories,” telling first their families and then their
communities about their reality.
Read the rest of Hlophe’s story and the stories of eleven other women who are
leading the response to HIV/AIDS in “WomenLead in the Fight Against AIDS”.

Breaking the silence, bit by bit
Kamalika Abeyaratne dedicated her life to caring for children in Sri Lanka
and had a wide circle of friends, until she discovered she was HIV positive.
"Most of my friends then stopped coming home. Some of my doctor colleagues still
cross the road when they see me approaching," says the 66-year-old medical
doctor and paediatrician, who now spends most of her time helping others living
with HIV or with AIDS.

Esther Guzha has lived with HIV for more than 13 years. During this time she
has experienced abuse from her husband's family, her youngest son died, and,
there have been days when she has been bed-ridden and did not know if she would
live to see another day. But Guzha also has established her own life and broken
away from the confinement placed on women in this Southern African nation by
culture. Read
