| World AIDS Day Message by Elizabeth Mataka, UN's Special Envoy on AIDS in Africa |
Reflecting on the World AIDS Day theme of 2009 of Universal Access and Human Rights, I was struck how much more needs to be done to ensure that women and girls across Sub-Saharan Africa can access comprehensive HIV prevention, care and support services.

TITLE: Ndizvo Zvandiri
AUTHOR: Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation
DATE: 2007
PUBLISHER: Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation
“Ndizvo Zvandiri” is 30-minute film that aims to promote advocacy in prevention
of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), and encourage disclosure of HIV status
and male participation in reproductive health issues. “Ndizvo Zvandiri,” which
means “This is What I Am,” tells the story of Miriam, who discovers that she is
HIV positive when she goes to look for antenatal care. Intended to be
representative of the challenges that many women in Zimbabwe face, the film
chronicles the gender challenges she faces in disclosing her status to her
husband, as well as how the couple eventually join hands to protect the future
of their unborn child. The film is complemented by a discussion guide to help
facilitate discussion on the various PMTCT and social issues portrayed in it.

This fact sheet reviews women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, focusing particularly
on young women. Many women and young people do not have access to the
information and services they need to protect themselves from HIV infection.
Women’s vulnerability is increased by marriage, sex work, injecting drug use,
being the partner of an injecting drug user, a student, and violent or coercive
sex.

Women account for nearly half of HIV infections worldwide and almost two-thirds

widely-available technology that women can control to protect themselves from
HIV. This is a brief that addresses women’s lack of resources to protect

to prevention strategies for mother-to-child transmission after hearing about

TITLE: At Risk: Rights Violations of HIV-Positive Women in Kenyan Health
Facilities
AUTHOR: Center for Reproductive Rights
DATE: 2008
PUBLISHER: Center for Reproductive Rights and Federation of Women
Lawyers–Kenya
This report vividly illustrates the failure of the Kenyan government to care for
women living with HIV. At healthcare centers across Kenya, these women encounter
physical and verbal abuse and are subject to discriminatory standards of care.
They often cannot access antiretroviral treatment and their rights to informed
consent and confidentiality are frequently violated during HIV testing and
treatment. The publication calls on the Kenyan government to implement systemic
changes to ensure that HIV-positive women can fully exercise their right to
affordable, accessible, and safe health services.

TITLE: Reducing adolescent girls' vulnerability to HIV infection:
Examining microfinance and sustainable livelihood approaches. A literature and
program review
AUTHOR: T. Lukas
DATE: 2008
PUBLISHER: Health Policy Initiative
This literature and program review focused on the current and future role of
microfinance and sustainable livelihood strategies in reducing adolescent girls'
vulnerability to HIV infection in developing countries, particularly in
sub-Saharan Africa. Part 1 of the review focuses on youth-centered programs to
prevent HIV infection among vulnerable female adolescents—including microfinance
and sustainable livelihood programs. Part 2 analyzes the relationship between
microfinance and HIV prevention in the general population, with a focus on women
and the oldest adolescents in the target group. Adapting the traditional
microfinance model to meet the needs of this sub-group could prove to benefit
not only these adolescents but also the microfinance industry.

| The Care Economy: Gender and the Silent AIDS Crisis in Southern Africa |
TITLE: The Care Economy: Gender and the Silent AIDS Crisis in Southern
Africa
AUTHOR: S. Urdang
DATE: 2006
PUBLISHER: Journal of Southern African Studies, Volume 32, Number 1
This article considers the impact of AIDS on women’s roles and responsibilities
within the household ‘care economy.’ It emphasizes that all interventions aimed
at reversing the epidemic need to take into account the excessive work-load that
members of the household, usually women, shoulder in responding to the needs of
sick family members. Most notably, gender equality and care economy issues need
to be identified by development programmes. There is also a need to implement
policies that focus on issues such as treatment, prevention, education, economic
empowerment and violence against women. The article argues that unless the care
economy and the relations of gender inequality within the household are included
in the design, implementation and evaluation of such interventions, results will
be compromised.

This article examines the association between the number of sexual partners and
the risk of HIV seropositivity among men and women presenting for HIV voluntary
counseling and testing (VCT) in northern Tanzania. Among women presenting for
VCT, the number of partners is strongly associated with rates of seropositivity;
however, even women reporting lifetime monogamy have a high risk for HIV
infection. Partner reduction should be coupled with efforts to place tools in
the hands of sexually active women to reduce their risk of contracting HIV.

| Failing Women, Withholding Protection: 15 lost years in making the female condom |
TITLE: Failing Women, Withholding Protection: 15 lost years in making the female
condom accessible
AUTHOR: Oxfam
DATE: 2008
PUBLISHER: Oxfam, WPF
This briefing paper is about powerful institutions’ neglect of duty by not
providing leadership on female condoms, and failing to meet women’s needs and
demands for them with a consistent and proportionate effort to make them
accessible and affordable. It concerns the ignorance, denial, and bias of the
powerful, at the expense of the rights of women.

| Re-Sexualising the Epidemic: Desire, Risk and HIV Prevention |
TITLE: Re-Sexualising the Epidemic: Desire, Risk and HIV Prevention
AUTHOR: J. Berger
DATE: 2004
PUBLISHER: Development Update
Even in the 'era of treatment' successful HIV prevention remains an enormous
challenge. This article argues that there is a need to pay more attention to sex
and desire in the design of HIV prevention programmes. The paper highlights how
perceived "dirty" issues, such as sex between men and anal intercourse between
men and women, are often overlooked by HIV prevention programmes. It also
explores how reasons why people may "choose" not to place themselves in safety
by engaging in sexual conduct with a high risk of HIV infection are often not
explored by researchers. The author calls for effective programmes that enable
behaviour change. This means dealing openly and honestly with the lives that
people actually lead and the sex they actually have. The need to ensure that
researchers do not avoid asking difficult questions is also emphasised.

Women Speak |
 |
 |
|
I am Gracia Violeta Ross Quiroga, a 28-year-old woman from Bolivia living
with HIV. It was in March 2000, when I had an infection that would not heal,
that I went to hospital for tests. I was tested for many different illnesses
including HIV. When the HIV test came back HIV positive, I could not believe it.
My family did not reject me but received me with open arms, and told me they did
not want to know what happened, they just wanted to be with me and support me
until the last day. Since I completed my Bachelor’s degree, I have been writing
publications and giving lectures on gender issues and the plight of PLWHA. The
terrible injustices affecting PLWHA in my country, especially against women,
encouraged me to get involved.
