Description

Universal access to prevention and treatment is impossible without care and support

Side event during the United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV
Conference Room E, UN North Lawn Building: 10 June 2011, 08.30-09.45

The provision of comprehensive care and support, including palliative care, is a fundamental component of achieving Universal Access.  It is required throughout the course of HIV related illness, regardless of the ability to access ART.  This side event will consider the impact of care and support services on the HIV response and explore the experiences of those who are providing and receiving care and support. The session will explore why care and support is the neglected pillar of the response as well as considering the consequences of its continued political and financial neglect on the epidemic as a whole and on the lives of those living with and affected by HIV. Participants will make concrete policy and programme recommendations for adequately resourcing care and support.
