This qualitative study focuses on the experiences and perspectives of HIV-positive women living in Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The purpose of the study is to give voice to women living with HIV and to allow their stories and views to inform an improved HIV response where the dignity of each and every woman and man is respected and protected. This publication expands upon the knowledge and data of HIV in the Pacific Islands Region as it explores the experiences of women living with HIV in Fiji and Papua New Guinea, the type of services that are available to these women, the impact of gender inequality on their lives and how to develop recommendations that will improve their access to services and prevent the spread of HIV.

Dignity Denied: Violations of the Rights of HIV-Positive Women in Chilean Health Facilities PDF Print E-mail

This report explores obstacles to quality care that women counter in healthcare facilities, including, lack of pre- and post-test counseling, breaches of confidentiality, discriminatory and abusive treatment, discrimination around motherhood, and coercive and forced sterilization. Section One provides an overview of the factors that contribute to Chilean women’s risk of contracting HIV. Section Two discusses HIV-positive women’s experience in Chilean healthcare facilities, as well as some of the structural barriers that impede access to quality healthcare services and the repercussions of discriminatory healthcare treatment. Section Three provides an overview of legal and human rights implications of the rights violations identifies in the report. Section Four offers recommendations to stakeholders based on the findings of the report.

Vulnerability and Resilience: Gender and HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean PDF Print E-mail

PUBLISHER: This paper reviews the most recent literature on HIV/AIDS, gender and sexuality in Latin America and the Caribbean and identifies the various ways in which gender influences the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention and access to services offering treatment, care and support. Under the rubric of gender, this paper also considers issues as they affect adolescent boys and men. Recommendations for programme and policy interventions that can help to reduce gender-related vulnerabilities to HIV/AIDS draw upon analysis of the vast number of sociocultural and economic factors contributing to women's and men's vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in the region.
