This article includes results of African Focus Group discussions in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda on the use of condoms, communication between spouses and dependency of women on male partners. The discussion groups found that cultural beliefs, ignorance and men's lack of cooperation were the main barriers to communication between partners on contraception and HIV/AIDS prevention. Several groups discussions were centered around the issue of violence if a woman refused sex or asked the man to wear of a condom.
